Two Replication Studies of a Time-Reversed (Psi) Priming Task and the Role of Expectancy in Reaction Times.Marilyn Schlitz, Daryl Bem, David Marcusson-Clavertz, Etzel Cardena, Jennifer Lyke, Raman Grover, Susan Blackmore, Patrizio Tressoldi, Serena Roney-Dougal, Dick Bierman, Jacob Jolij, Eva Lobach, Glenn Hartelius, Thomas Rabeyron, William Bengston, Sky Nelson, Garret Moddel & Arnaud Delorme - 2021 - Journal of Scientific Exploration 35 (1):65-90.
Two experiments involving an international collaboration of experimenters sought to replicate and extend a previously published psi experiment on precognition by Daryl Bem that has been the focus of extensive research. The experiment reverses the usual cause–effect sequence of a standard psychology experiment using priming and reaction times. The preregistered confirmatory hypothesis is that response times to incongruent stimuli will be longer than response times to congruent stimuli even though the prime has not yet appeared when the participant records their (...)

Forming Professional Bioethicists: The Program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.Michele Carter, H. Phillips Hamlin, Jennifer Heyl, Glenn C. Graber, James Lindemann Nelson & Linda A. Rankin - 2000 - Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics 9 (3):418-423.
As a way of contributing to bioethics' understanding of itself, and, more particularly, to invigorate conversation about how we can best educate future colleagues, we present here a sketch of the quarter-century-old graduate concentration in medical ethics housed in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Our hope is to incite other programs to share their histories, strategies, problems, and aspirations, so as to help the field as a whole get a clearer sense of how we are (...)

Structural characteristics of two highly selective opioid peptides.Richard J. Knapp, Henry I. Yamamura, Wieslaw Kazmierski & Victor J. Hruby - 1989 - Bioessays 10 (2-3):58-61.
The demonstration of opioid receptors by radioligand binding and the discovery of their endogenous peptide ligands has provided a new class of compounds that can be used for the development of novel opioids. The number of potential receptor targets for such opioids has been expanded by the identification of multiple opioid receptor types The development of highly selective opioid peptides using the principles of conformational restriction permits the analysis of the structure‐activity requirements of each receptor type, and is facilitating the (...)

  9. Is it Wrong to Criminalize and Punish Psychopaths?Andrea L. Glenn, Adrian Raine & William S. Laufer - 2011 - Emotion Review 3 (3):302-304.
Increasing evidence from psychology and neuroscience suggests that emotion plays an important and sometimes critical role in moral judgment and moral behavior. At the same time, there is increasing psychological and neuroscientific evidence that brain regions critical in emotional and moral capacity are impaired in psychopaths. We ask how the criminal law should accommodate these two streams of research, in light of a new normative and legal account of the criminal responsibility of psychopaths.

Aesthetics and nature: the appreciation of natural beauty and the environment.Glenn Parsons - 2023 - Dublin, Ireland: Bloomsbury Academic, Bloomsbury Publishing Plc.
The appreciation of nature and natural beauty demands our attention as environmental issues become ever more urgent. In this timely introduction, Glenn Parsons provides an overview of philosophical work on the aesthetics of nature, identifying key conceptual questions, clarifying central theories, and analyzing the ethical ramifications of our experience of natural beauty. Outlining five major approaches to understanding the aesthetic value of nature, this second edition explores the aesthetic appreciation of nature as it occurs in wilderness, in gardens, and (...)

Developing past and future selves for time travel narratives.Katherine Nelson - 2007 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 30 (3):327-328.
Mental time travel requires the sense of a past and future self, which is lacking in the early years of life. Research on the development of autobiographical memory and development of self sheds light on the difference between memory in other animals and its cultural narrative basis in humans.

Después se reconstruyen tres aspectospropios de la dimensión interpretativa para mostrar que dicha situaciónde tensión y conflicto puede comprenderse por fuera de la alternativa deobjetividad y de subjetividad establecida por la concepción clásica del (...)

    Ideas and Animals: The Hard Problem of Leibnizian Metaphysics.Glenn A. Hartz & Catherine Wilson - 2005 - Studia Leibnitiana 37 (1):1 - 19.

    Against Theory 2: Hermeneutics and Deconstruction.Steven Knapp & Walter Benn Michaels - 1987 - Critical Inquiry 14 (1):49-68.
In “Against Theory” we argued that a text means what its author intends it to mean. We argued further that all attempts to found a method of interpretation on a general account of language involve imagining that a text can mean something other than what its author intends. Therefore, we concluded, all such attempts are bound to fail; there can be no method of interpretation. But the attempt to imagine that a text can mean something other than what its author (...)

    Introducing the theory of relativity.Peter G. Nelson - 2015 - Foundations of Chemistry 18 (1):15-19.
A simple way of introducing the theory of relativity to chemistry students is presented. This is based on experimental observations of the variation in the mass of an electron with speed. Analysis of these generates the equations chemists use, and provides a basis for critical discussion of the theory.

The problem with the farmer’s voice.Glenn Davis Stone & Andrew Flachs - 2014 - Agriculture and Human Values 31 (4):649-653.
In this essay we present three biases that make it difficult to represent farmer voices in a meaningful way. These biases are information bias, individual bias, and short-term bias. We illustrate these biases through two case studies. One is the case of Golden Rice in the Philippines and the other is the case of Bt cotton in India.

Contemporary theories of self-consciousness typically begin by dividing experiences of the self into types, each requiring separate explanation. The stereotypical case of an out of body experience may be seen to suggest a distinction between the sense of oneself as an experiencing subject, a mental entity, and a sense of oneself as an embodied person, a bodily entity. Point of view, in the sense of the place from which the subject seems to experience the world, in this case is tied (...)

The nurse researcher: an added dimension to qualitative research methodology.Glenn Gardner - 1996 - Nursing Inquiry 3 (3):153-158.
Nurse researchers are increasingly adopting qualitative methodologies for research practice and theory development. These approaches to research are, in many cases, more appropriate for die field of nursing inquiry than the previously dominant techno‐rational methods. However, there remains the issue of adapting methodologies developed in other academic disciplines to the nursing research context. This paper draws upon my own experience with interpretive research to raise questions about the issue of nursing research within a social science research framework. The paper argues (...)

    On the practical irrational of immorality.Michael Nelson - 2018 - Manuscrito 41 (4):389-429.
I argue that the Formula of Humanity, the principle that we should always treat the humanity of a person as an end in itself and never as a mere means, is a principle of pure practical reason. Insofar as that principle is also the fundamental grounds of morality, it follows, then, that all autonomous rational agents are committed to morality.

The Ethics Code Does Not Equal Ethics: A Response to O’Donohue.Samuel Knapp, Michael C. Gottlieb & Mitchell M. Handelsman - 2020 - Ethics and Behavior 30 (4):303-309.
O’Donohue has identified 37 criticisms of the American Psychological Association’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct (Ethics Code), although many of his criticisms go far beyond what is found written in the APA Ethics Code, to include the process of adjudicating ethics complaints by the American Psychological Association Ethics Committee, and the process by which the Ethics Code was developed. The authors claim that a major shortcoming of O’Donohue’s article is that he adopted an unrealistically expansive role for (...)
